American Horror Story – First thoughts

One of the newest shows on television has me the most perplexed over whether or not I like it. American Horror Story definitely has something lined up…just not sure quite what it is. It’s got the uber creepy factor, but I’m undecided if it’s trying *too* hard. I had named episode one “The Story of Dylan McDermott’s Ass”, due to…well… his copious ass shots and the underlying story of his character getting ass. I have no problem with Dylan McDermott, in theory; I just can’t deal with (spoiler alert) a man sobbing while whacking one off. It’s funny and really uncomfortable all at the same time. And then, more uncomfortable awkwardness over laughing at a man sobbing and whacking. It’s just not happy fun times, but then again, this show isn’t meant to be happy fun times.

Now on the plus side, Jessica Lange is all sorts of delightfully creepy. I would watch the show just for her. The other characters just don’t feel as strongly developed as hers does — and it’s only the second episode. Oh, second episode? More sobbing, whackless though. Turns out it’s the sobbing that bothers me the most.

The real issue with this show is whether or not the creepy factor is almost laughable more than creepy. There is so much shit going on in any given episode that it seems more fantastical than usual — you know, considering it’s a made up television show and all. But I will continue to give the show a shot because I’m hoping that this is a rather less than subtle way to tie characters and history together. And I want to see that gimp dude again. Not the sobbing whacking though. Or any sobbing. Just can’t deal with that.
