If there was one thing I was apprehensive about spending 8+ hours a day on a computer, it was the thought of eventually developing carpal tunnel. Now I hear word on the street is that job doesn’t necessarily dictate probability as far as carpal tunnel is concerned, but tell that to my hands. One may also ask why would someone who has carpal tunnel choose to continue to write on a personal blog, but I would have to say that injury doesn’t dictate common sense in my case. Ever, really.
So, yes, I managed to get myself a nice dose of carpal tunnel in both hands. I like to call it “Copy/Paste Syndrome” cause I’m pretty sure a rabid week of some very manual site migration did me in. However it happened, this has not be a good year for my hands. In January, I fell and cracked my wrist — but didn’t get it checked out till May. In September, I fell and caught myself on the bad wrist. Then the carpal tunnel diagnosis happened. To top it all off, I almost cut off part of my thumb in a freak kitchen accident with an unwieldy carrot. I think something is trying to give me a hint that I am refusing to take.
Honestly, if I didn’t do web development or database work, I’m not sure what I’d do. Mime work maybe. I don’t think they need too much use of their hands. I’m sure I can fake it.
